The Building Blocks of Ball Control

Mastering ball control isn’t about flashy tricks, though those can be impressive. It’s about the fundamentals:

  • First Touch: This sets the tone for everything. A good first touch kills the momentum of the ball, bringing it immediately under your control. Think of it as receiving a pass not just with your foot, but with your entire body, absorbing the impact and guiding the ball where you want it to go.
  • Dribbling: This is where you dictate the pace and direction of play. It’s about manipulating the ball with small, controlled touches, keeping it close to your feet and using your body to shield it from opponents.
  • Passing and Receiving: Accurate passing starts with good ball control. When you receive the ball cleanly, you have more time to pick out your pass and execute it with precision.

Training for Excellence

Many young players ask me how to improve their ball control. My answer is simple: practice, practice, practice. But it’s not just about mindlessly kicking the ball around. It’s about focused, deliberate practice.

  • Wall Work: One of my favorite drills is simply passing the ball against a wall. This helps you improve your first touch, your passing accuracy, and your ability to control the ball under pressure.

The Mental Game

One technique I use is visualization. Before a match, I’ll close my eyes and imagine myself controlling the ball, making passes, and scoring goals. This helps me build confidence and get into the right mindset.
